Take My Yoke Upon You
I walked toward Jesus. He said to me, “Take my yoke and put it on. Then learn from me.”
I watched as Jesus took the harness of a double yoke and placed it around his neck. His eyes were questioning me.
I stepped toward him and tilted my head to the side, looking into his eyes. I thought he would place the harness from the other side over my head. He waited patiently, his hands down by his side. Then I thought about his words. “Take my yoke. You, Tammy, take my yoke.” I had to take the action. He would not do it for me or to me. My choice.
I lifted the harness and placed it around my neck. I was surprised at how light it felt. I looked over at Jesus. His eyes smiled while the look on his face was more serious. remembered the rest of the sentence, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and I will give you rest for your soul.” Seems curious that yoking myself to him will give me rest for my soul. Yet, I feel this resting within me like I’ve never felt before. I trust his words, for I know his gentleness and love for me.
I realized in that action if he goes to the right, I will go to the right. If he goes to the left, I will go to the left. When he pauses, I pause, and when he moves, I move. Being yoked to him means I move with him, trusting Him in all things. This will be new for me. It will take work. But I know it is where I want to be, walking in step with Jesus, my rabbi.
